Bio
Karen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Bushido Billing! She began her career with degrees in Zoology, Psychology, and Chemistry before earning her Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College in 2009 at just 23 years old — the youngest doctor to graduate at the time. After a short associate position, she opened her own practice in Morton, IL at age 24, later earning a Fellowship in Acupuncture, becoming a Certified Medical Examiner for the National Registry, and achieving certification in Animal Chiropractic as one of only 32 doctors in Illinois.
For over a decade, Karen has run a thriving mixed practice that includes human chiropractic care, animal chiropractic, acupuncture, and hundreds of DOT physicals each year. Her firsthand experience with poor billing companies — and watching her colleagues suffer from the same issues — led her and Jeff to start Bushido Billing in 2021 with a simple belief: we can do this better.
Guided by honesty, strong communication, and a commitment to helping others rise, Karen excels at fixing broken systems and creating more efficient ways of working through automations, spreadsheets, and smart processes. She loves watching Bushido’s culture evolve and grow, comparing it to watching a child develop into something beyond what she ever imagined.
Outside of work, Karen is a dedicated sports fan who winds down by watching the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, Ohio State Buckeyes, or the Vancouver Canucks. She loves traveling, being outdoors near any body of water, and spending time with her dogs, Hercules and Apollo — who often accompany her to the office. On quiet days, she enjoys cards, volleyball, and cozy nights on the couch.

Jeff is the Chief Financial Officer and co-founder of Bushido Billing. He brings over a decade of experience working with small businesses helping them achieve growth and increased success. Since 2016, he has worked alongside his wife in their chiropractic practice in Seattle, Washington and during that time developed a passion for helping chiropractors succeed in business. His primary role within Bushido Billing is to help ensure everyone else on the team can do their job effectively and efficiently. He brings years of billing experience to the team and his role encompasses marketing, analytics, managing finances and day to day operations.
Outside of work, you’ll likely find Jeff enjoying one of his many hobbies which include motorcycling, sailing, camping and exploring the outdoors.

Sara is the Chief Operating Officer at Bushido Billing! Married to a chiropractor, she began her career managing a busy chiropractic office, where she learned the ins and outs of insurance billing and practice operations. After seeing firsthand the frustrations many clinics faced with traditional billing companies, Sara started her own small billing practice to better support providers.
In 2021, she discovered Bushido Billing and immediately connected with the company’s ethics, culture, and clinic-first approach. Today, she uses her deep industry experience to lead operations with integrity, innovation, and a commitment to helping both providers and patients thrive.
Outside of work, Sara enjoys spending time with her husband, two kids, and two dogs, as well as traveling, kayaking, trap shooting, and fishing. Known affectionately as “Unicorn,” she brings her curiosity and drive to every challenge—especially cleaning up complex accounts.

Bio
April is the Director of Training at Bushido Billing! With a uniquely diverse background spanning healthcare operations, leadership, customer service, and specialized chiropractic billing, she brings over two decades of hands-on experience to her role. Her career began in high school at a veterinary clinic and coaching a swim team, followed by hospitality roles throughout college (GO GATORS). In 2003, she entered the chiropractic field as a Chiropractic Assistant — the spark that ignited her long-term passion for patient care and behind-the-scenes clinic operations.
From resort management internships to HR work at Eglin Air Force Base, banking, and multiple chiropractic offices across the country, April has developed deep expertise in operations, billing, and training. Through military relocations and career shifts, she continued refining her billing skills in Virginia, California, and Nebraska before joining Bushido Billing full-time in February 2023. Today, she leads our training department with a blend of technical knowledge, curiosity, and a genuine passion for helping others grow.
April is motivated by the combination of teaching, problem-solving, and restoring clarity to complex billing situations. She loves empowering team members, building effective processes, and supporting clinics with accuracy, efficiency, and a clear understanding of why things work the way they do. Guided by integrity, accuracy, curiosity, and service, she believes that strong training and collaboration make every clinic — and every team member — more successful.
Outside of work, April enjoys swimming, crafting, and spending quality time with her family. Whether being active, creative, or simply unplugging at home, she values the moments that help life slow down and feel more grounded.

Leveraging her background in psychology and over a decade of experience in administrative and leadership roles, Loriann excels at building systems that make work more efficient, scalable, and human-centered.

Emily is a Team Lead at Bushido Billing! She brings seven years of hands-on chiropractic experience to her role, including six years as an Office Manager and her start as a Chiropractic Assistant. Her background gives her a strong understanding of chiropractic terminology, charting, and front-to-back office operations. Emily also brings extensive expertise in ChiroTouch and Jane.app, allowing her to support clinics with both efficiency and confidence.
Having worked exclusively in chiropractic throughout her adult life, Emily has a deep appreciation for the profession and the providers who dedicate themselves to helping others—often in ways the public doesn’t fully understand or value. She’s passionate about ensuring chiropractors receive the reimbursement they deserve and believes in transparent, proactive communication so clinics always know what’s happening with their billing without it consuming their time.
Emily is guided by honesty, adaptability, and respect. She understands that when a clinic seeks help, they’re often overwhelmed, and she aims to make every provider feel supported, understood, and treated like a true member of the Bushido team. As a Team Lead, she loves collaborating closely with her coworkers, creating a connected and supportive work environment even while remote, and building strong relationships with providers rooted in trust and open communication.
Adaptability is one of Emily’s greatest strengths—critical when navigating the constantly changing expectations of multiple insurance companies and clinic workflows. She is eager to continue growing in leadership and helping Bushido support even more clinics with excellence and care.

Katie is a Team Lead at Bushido Billing! A licensed X-ray technologist by trade, she began her career in a Level 1 trauma center before transitioning into chiropractic to pursue a family-friendly schedule. Over the next decade, she gained hands-on experience in billing, X-rays, and therapy within a chiropractic office, building a strong clinical and operational foundation.
Since joining Bushido Billing in 2023, Katie has progressed through multiple roles, supporting a wide variety of clinic types—including chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, and mental health. This has given her a comprehensive understanding of healthcare billing and a highly adaptable skill set. She is passionate about removing the stress and complexity of billing so providers can focus fully on patient care.
Katie is guided by integrity, accountability, precision, collaboration, and compassion. She believes in doing what’s right, communicating openly, and holding herself to the highest standards of accuracy. As a former certified coder and billing manager, Michael brings a deep understanding of both the clinical and administrative sides of healthcare. His background has strengthened his problem-solving skills, adaptability, and ability to guide others toward success.
Michael is motivated by helping practices achieve efficiency and financial success through accurate, well-managed billing. Michelle is a Team Lead at Bushido Billing! She began her career in the dental field, spending nearly a decade in both laboratory operations and in-office roles with two outstanding providers. It was during that in-office time that she was first introduced to medical billing. After stepping back for several years to be home with her kids, Michelle joined Bushido Billing in 2021 and has been an essential part of the team ever since.
Drawn to Bushido’s values and mission, Michelle is deeply committed to helping providers avoid the billing challenges she’s seen firsthand throughout her career. She prioritizes communication, honesty, and thoroughness in every interaction, ensuring clinics feel supported, informed, and confident in their billing process. Janie is the Quality Assurance Lead at Bushido Billing! With over 14 years of experience in healthcare administration, she specializes in medical billing and revenue cycle management for physical therapy and chiropractic clinics. Her background spans insurance verification, claims submission, payment posting, appeals, audits, and AR follow-up across commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and VA payers. Janie is highly experienced with EMR systems including Jane App, Prompt, WebPT, TurboPT, and ChiroTouch, and is known for her strong skills in compliance, organization, problem-solving, and cross-team communication.
Janie is driven by helping clinics remain financially healthy so providers can focus on patient care without the added stress of billing or compliance issues. She enjoys bringing clarity and structure to complex billing challenges and takes pride in building efficient, repeatable processes that support accuracy and long-term stability. Ashleigh was drawn to insurance billing after witnessing firsthand how difficult it can be for clinics to find trustworthy, dedicated billing support. Learning the fundamentals of billing alongside her mother-in-law gave her the confidence to step into the field with a clear purpose: helping offices recover what they’re rightfully owed and easing the stress of uncollected revenue. She brings 20 years of experience in the chiropractic field, including 18 years working in a Wisconsin clinic where she served at the front desk, as a Chiropractic Technician (CT), and later as the in-house biller. Over the past two years with Bushido, she has expanded her expertise even further, supporting clinics with accuracy, organization, and a deep understanding of chiropractic workflows.
Detail-oriented and highly organized, Laurie excels at resolving complex insurance issues, improving processes, and recovering revenue that clinics may have assumed was lost. She’s driven by the opportunity to help practices run more smoothly—identifying what isn’t working, cleaning up systems, and restoring order so providers can finally see the results they deserve. Her passion comes from seeing how much poor billing can harm a clinic, and her mission is to turn that around with persistence, clarity, and care.
Laurie was drawn to Bushido Billing because of its genuine compassion and in-house mentality. Despite being a remote team, the level of dedication, support, and ownership matches what she valued most when working directly inside a clinic. Megan is a Billing Specialist at Bushido Billing! With a strong background in healthcare, she spent much of her career in Physical Therapy, beginning as a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant providing hands-on care in skilled nursing homes. She later transitioned into an administrative role as an Office Manager for a Physical Therapy clinic, giving her a well-rounded understanding of both the clinical and operational sides of healthcare.
Motivated by her love of problem-solving and supporting patients from behind the scenes, Megan was drawn to Bushido Billing’s family-like culture and values. She enjoys contributing to a team that prioritizes accuracy, integrity, and doing right by providers. Guided by accuracy, accountability, and empathy, Megan approaches her work with a commitment to clean claims, clear communication, and patience — all essential qualities in a fast-paced billing environment.
One of Megan’s greatest strengths is creating organized, efficient workflows. Vanessa is a Billing Specialist at Bushido Billing! She has a strong background in healthcare, having worked in chiropractic, orthodontics, and medical office roles. Her journey began in a chiropractic office, where she gained experience in administrative support and billing. She then transitioned to an orthodontic practice as a Marketing Coordinator and X-ray Technician, before moving to Utah and joining a medical office as a Patient Service Coordinator and Drug Technician. Most recently, she worked at a Cancer Center as a Billing Assistant, where she discovered her passion for medical billing.
Outside of work, Vanessa loves staying active by playing pickleball, volleyball, and recently kickboxing, thanks to her brother's influence. She’s a big fan of hiking and spending time in nature. A lover of books, she enjoys reading non-fiction, romance, and mystery/suspense novels. Vanessa is also an avid baker, believing that chocolate chip cookies lead to sweet dreams. She enjoys spending time with her family, her boyfriend, and practicing calligraphy.
